Many commissions are completed within four to seven weeks after design approval, while particularly intricate pieces or designs requiring rare gemstones may take up to eight weeks or longer. A clear schedule is discussed at the outset so that expectations are understood before making begins.
Understanding Gemstone Certification and Quality
The quality of a gemstone cannot be understood through one number alone. Colour, transparency, inclusions, cut, and light performance all influence its character and suitability for a particular design.
Principal diamonds are independently certified, with GIA or HRD documentation provided when available. Stones above 0.30ct are independently certificated, while smaller diamonds are carefully sorted to the minimum house quality of G–H colour and VS clarity. Depending on the requirement and the design, we also offer collection quality ‘smalls’ of D- F colour and VVS clarity.
Certification provides useful assurance, but the visual relationship between the stone and the design remains equally important. Cut determines brilliance and light performance, while colour and clarity are selected for visual balance rather than numerical hierarchy alone.

Natural stones were formed through geological processes over immense periods of time. Their origin, rarity, and individual characteristics give each one a character that cannot be reproduced in precisely the same way.
Blacklock does not currently offer lab-grown diamonds. Although lab-grown and natural diamonds share the same physical composition, their origins, rarity, pricing structures, and residual value differ. For engagement rings and significant pieces intended to be kept for generations, we believe natural diamonds provide greater confidence in long-term desirability and value.
Every recommendation also considers how the jewellery will be worn. Durable stones are generally more suitable for everyday rings, while softer gemstones, including opal, may require a more protective setting or may be better suited to occasional wear.

Where possible, the principal parts of a bespoke piece are made by hand. Engagement rings may be cast, mounted, and set before being hallmarked and hand-polished. More intricate jewels may be created in separate components, assembled with precision, set, and finished by hand.
The finished piece is inspected by Chris Blacklock FGA before it is approved. It is then presented in Blacklock’s signature packaging, ready to wear, enjoy, and eventually pass forward.

Understanding the Design Deposit - For intricate commissions, a design deposit may be required to cover detailed sketches or technical studies exploring proportion and feasibility. If the commission proceeds, this amount is credited towards the finished piece. A design deposit is not required for every project and will always be discussed clearly in advance.
Planning the Commission Timeline - Many bespoke pieces are completed within four to seven weeks of design approval. Rare gemstones, technically complex settings, or extensive handcrafting may require additional time. A deposit is taken before work begins, with the balance payable on completion.
