Semi-precious...no such thing

It is important that the phrase 'semi-precious' is debunked and put into context. Coloured gemstones are often talked about as being 'semi-precious', however in reality there are certain coloured gemstones that are more valuable and rarer than diamonds.

Each coloured gemstone is unique and greatly valuable - take a Columbian emerald from the Chivor mine and you will pay significant sums to have one of the finest, most sophisticated stones on the planet that exudes an intense, beautiful radiant green.

Emeralds Emerald

The idea of each gemstone being unique needs to be understood - these rare stones are formed in special geological conditions where the right elements are present under intense pressure and heat to form the gemstone. This coming together of nature does not happen in abundance and needs to be appreciated.

We often struggle to explain to a client that when they ask us to replace a coloured stone from an earring that has been lost or damaged that finding a matching coloured stone will be difficult, almost impossible - the appreciation that each coloured stone is unique is often lost.

To find a matching stone which has a particular colour, shade, size and level of perfection would take a very long time.

We often say that when you see a particular piece which features a gemstone that you like, then you need to buy it as you will might see one like it again. This is not a specific sales line but the truth of the matter.

The finest rubies, emeralds and sapphires are often more valuable than diamonds. These stones are irreplaceable and therefore their value reflects this. In short coloured gemstones are individual, unique works of art crafted by the finest artist in the world - nature!
