The FIVE 'C's

The following offers you a quick introduction to understanding diamonds

Cut

Every diamond is cut to specific, precise measurements to maximise the total internal reflection (the sparkle) of the stone. Some diamonds are cut more accurately than others. Grading runs from 'poor', 'fair', 'good', 'very good' to 'excellent'.

Colour

Colour describes how much colour tint is within a diamond. A white colourless diamond is generally accepted as being the best and is therefore the benchmark by which all other diamonds are graded. The scale runs from 'D – colourless' down to 'Z – strongly coloured'.

Clarity

Clarity is used to describe how many natural marks are found within a diamond. These birthmarks are described as inclusions. Their position and number affect their grade. The clarity scale runs from FL – 'Flawless' down to I3 – 'Marks visible with the naked eye'.

Carat

A carat is the unit of weight used to measure the weight of diamonds and gemstones. The size of the gemstone is usually expressed in carats and abbreviated to be 'cts'. There are 100 points in one carat. A 0.75cts diamond is ¾ of a carat.

Certification

A Diamond Certificate is the independent verification of a diamond's characteristics, such as cut, colour, clarity and carat weight. There are many testing laboratories throughout the world. The most famous being the GIA (Gemological Institute of America), HRD (Hoge Raad voor Diamant - Antwerp World Diamond Centre) and IGI (International Gemological Institute)
